Oh, I forgot - always keep scale and balance in mind - in relationship to the room and the furniture to each other.

One more thing, if you look at my designs, for example, you'll probably find them to be somewhat different from most but definitely my own. No matter how I try, I can't seem to break out of it.  I do believe, though, that they have what I refer to below, that "common feel" the pros talk about.

Bgref, I had a bit of problem copying and pasting. If it is confusing, let me know.  When I wrote "Pros in the field define "it" , I meant define eclectic design.  I you google eclectic design, you'll ind hundreds of examples and samples.

ydiaenderlebellHi Bgref,So sorry you didn't win the contest with your classy design, but a showing of 18 votes is more than many people get for their very often excellent designs. I guess it is all a matter of taste and preference of the voters. I think you did a great job.I just did an extensive paragraph about eclectic design but the Save comment seems to have a word limit, so I'll save a number of them separately, if possible

As promised, I'll take a few minutes and talk about Daisy's answer to your question in regard to her style. Although I am not an expert in interior design, I used to write fairly extensive articles about interior design for a small Southwestern magazine, and in the process of researching and interviewing pros I learned a lot about it. So I'll share a bit of my wisdom with you. As for Daisy's designs, I think she has a highly eclectic style, which, by the way, is also the most popular one and most likely, always will be. If you look at multi=million dollar homes, you'll find that they most highly priced designers are mostly using this approach.

Ok, here we go. Eclectic means using pieces from different periods and furniture styles together. This does not necessarily call for a knowledge of furniture styles etc. but since you want to go into architecture, I highly recommend learning all about furniture development and its history, which is really interrelated with the development of architecture . Pros in the field often define it as a combination of furniture and accessories that have a "similar feel".

One of them told me that very often a person (even without furniture knowledge) is drawn to certain pieces from different periods or cultures because, unknown to that person, they have a common "feel". I can substantiate this fact, for it reflects my own design decisions throughout my life, although I am fairly familiar with furniture styles and their history. One caveat - one restriction to that "common feel" is that you cannot, for example, combine mahogany and oak, that would definitely not have a common feel, because one wood is fine and the other coarse grained. You may however, if you inherit a piece of oak that won't fit in with your cherry or mahogany, simply paint it.
